In the past 40 years, cervical cancer in the United States has declined in large part due to women receiving regular pap smear screenings.   Pap smears can detect precancerous cells before they turn into cancer.  Treatment usually involves the removal of the precancerous cells and close follow up to insure they don’t recur.  Removing the precancerous cells doesn’t mean more won’t develop at a later time since cervical cancer is caused by a virus that remains in the body even after treatment.
